National Achievers Society (NAS) Students Complete STEM Tour At ORNL
1/13/2011
National Achievers Society students are treated to a tour at Oak Ridge National Lab.
On November 2, 2010, Ms. Donna Worthy, Program Director, Knoxville Area Urban League; M. Carl Wheeler, Vols4STEM Volunteer and Mrs. Gwen McKenzie, volunteer, chaperoned 25 National Achiever Students, from various high schools in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge area. The STEM tour was conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and was coordinated by M. Carl Wheeler with the ORNL staff. During the three hour visit, the students toured the Super Computer Facility, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), and the Graphite Reactor. Lab officials briefed the students on each facility and explained educational requirements associated with facility as well as answering numerous questions from the students. The NAS is a Honor Society sponsored by the National Urban League. The scholars are required to maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average and must attend several activities during the academic school year.
